 Since generative AI took the world by storm in 2022, linguists have been bombarded with stern calls to “embrace” it—or risk being left behind. But what if skepticism is not resistance to progress, but a legitimate response to the technology’s impact on our profession, society, and environment?
In The AI-Skeptical Linguist, Nicolas Knobil offers a counterpoint to the prevailing AI narrative. He examines the impact of machine translation and generative AI on translation quality, pay, workload, and employment, and questions whether post-editing is truly a viable alternative to human translation.


Going back to the fundamentals of translation and interpreting, he explores what makes linguistic work uniquely human, while distinguishing between technologies that genuinely support linguists and those that threaten to replace them.

Joe has been a long-time supporter of the GSIT program as an instructor in English-Spanish translation. And of course, as you all know, he has served for 18 years as the Chief of the Translating Division in the Department of State.
